Masterprogram i samhällsvetenskap, Human Ecology - Culture, power ...

The programme gives you perspectives and analytical tools for communicating about problems of sustainability. It will help you understand the cultural and political dimensions of consumption and resource use, how perceptions of environment and economy differ in time and space, and how environmental problems are distributed in global society. It will enhance your ability to (1) Understand how environmental problems are generated, interpreted, and negotiated in different cultural and historical contexts; (2) Distinguish between natural, cultural, and political aspects of sustainability issues, and to discuss the relative significance of these aspects in specific contexts; (3) Communicate across boundaries separating different disciplines, cultural traditions, or the interests of business, politics, and social movements. After graduating from the programme you will be able to work in fields such as research, education, journalism, environmental management, and development aid. The programme comprises a total of 120 higher education credits, including a Master s thesis of 30 credits. The first term begins with the profile course Culture, Economy, and Ecology (15 credits), which introduces the students to the main themes and issues of the programme. This is followed by courses in theory of science and research methods (15 credits). The second term begins with the course Lifestyle, Consumption, and Identity (15 credits). This course increases the students understanding and knowledge of human ecology through deepening their comprehension of theories and current research. This is followed, in the second half of the second term, by courses in theory of science and research methods (15 credits). The third term consists of optional courses to be taken at Lund University or any other recognised university in Sweden or abroad, enabling students to tailor the programme to suit their particular interests (30 credits). Optional courses offered by the Human Ecology Division include Political Ecology, as well as Methodological Specialization and Practical Application. The latter course involves a concrete case study in human ecology and sustainability, providing the student with a chance to practically apply skills developed in earlier courses to problems relating to future career plans. It will ideally assume the form of a project conducted in collaboration with a potential employer, e.g., an organization, authority, or corporation confronted with a specific sustainability issue requiring trans-disciplinary understanding and communication. During the fourth and last term students complete the programme by writing a Master s thesis (30 credits), which provides the students with the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of theories and methods, ideally by building on the theoretical, methodological and applied contexts explored in previous courses.
